The race for the Sarasota County Commission in District 3 between Neal Rainford and former Sarasota County Sheriff Tom Knight will determine among other issues, who is in control of the political power in Sarasota County.
Knight is a three-time elected former Sarasota County Sheriff going against Rainford, who is a handpicked candidate of local developer Pat Neal and his handpicked Chairman of the Sarasota County Republican Executive Committee (REC), Jack Brill.
Knight, who is long time resident of District 3 having been raised in the area is going against Rainford, who recently moved into District 3 from Sarasota County District 1.
Rainford recently bought a home in the rural District 1 for $842,000 before moving to District 3 to run against Knight.
The race could not only restructure the political power base in Sarasota County, it will also determine if a legitimate documented carpetbagger like Rainford can defeat a longtime resident like Knight raised in District 3.
Can Rainford, who recently bought a home on a five-acre plot in rural northeast Sarasota County District 1 can now convince voters in District 3, stating that less than a year a half later “he would rather live in in an urban setting with a wide selection of restaurants he finds on the Food Network.”
CULVERHOUSE TAKES ON NEAL/BERUFF/BENDERSON/JENSEN
The Knight/Rainford race has also pitted major developers against each other. Rainford has received 10, $1,000 contributions from Pat Neal, Carlos Beruff, Randy Benderson and Rex Jensen.
Knight has received 11, $1,000 contributions from Palmer Ranch developer Hugh Culverhouse Jr., who in the past has supported candidates in opposition to Neal and his trio of Beruff, Benderson and Jensen handpicked candidates.
Culverhouse supported successfully Maria Rhul running against a Neal handpicked Judge Brian Iten to become a Judge in the 12th Judicial District in 2018.
Culverhouse also was rewarded over $20 million in civil lawsuit for being defrauded by Benderson. The decision by a six-member jury was overturned by a Neal judge. Neal for years has been documented in control of selecting 12th Judicial District judges.
Culverhouse also expended over a million dollars in attempting to have the courts go against the redistricting of over 20,000 African American voters, who were redistricted to aid the election of Neal and his cronies’ handpicked candidates.
“We’re all American. Why in the world should we allow one group of Americans, simply because of their color, to be treated differently?” Culverhouse said when asked why he is backing the lawsuit.

Knight has hired Pat Bainter, who is the longtime power house consultant from Gainesville, who since 1987 has steadily built his company Data Targeting from a startup company to a must-have campaign team for Republicans, often securing victories for candidates at all levels of government.

That contest has been ongoing since America First activist Connie Brunni lost by 12 votes out 210 votes to present REC Chairman Brill for Chair of REC in 2022.
Brunni is a strong supporter of Knight and is making it a contest between the Brill led Republicans establishment against the grassroots activists of the local Republican Party.
Brunni in supporting Knight well organized grassroots organization is using the tactics she utilized in her ZEM organization in 2022.
The ZEM organization led to the defeat of three Democrat School Board candidates, along with other Democrat candidates.
The Rainford campaign is using the Brill tactics that lost the recent Venice City election in which two Democrats City Council members defeated Brill’s handpicked candidates in the stronghold of Republican conservatism.

The Knight/Rainford election has repercussion’s also for Governor Ron DeSantis in that he chose Rainford over Knight to succeed the deceased Sarasota County Commissioner Nancy Detert.
DeSantis made that decision on the recommendations of Brill, Neal and Beruff. The selection raised a lot of concerns of local Republican activists, especially in District 3 when Rainford moved recently to the District only after being appointed by DeSantis.
Concerns included that as opposed to Knight being elected Sheriff of Sarasota County on three occasions by heavy majority, Rainford’s only involvement in public offices is being appointed to the Sarasota Planning Commission and being a Brill appointed Secretary of the local REC.
Instead of DeSantis pushing a law-and-order agenda and appointing a three-time elected Sarasota County Sheriff, Tom Knight--DeSantis is being called by Distric 3 activists as the Brill and Neal, “Waterboy Rainford."
