Jimenez
On November 5th, a vote for Jose Jimenez in Sarasota County Charter Review District 5 will give the residents of Sarasota County a powerful opportunity to shape our future and ensure responsible governance and development.
Jimenez and his family moved to Sarasota County 3.5 years ago after leaving Minnesota. Although Jiminez is now a proud Florida resident, he continues to practice patent and trademark law, CM Law in Minnesota.
Jimenez in announcing to run for the Sarasota County Charter Review stated, “In recent years, our Charter seems to have become somewhat inactive, no longer functioning as it was meant to—primarily for the benefit of the people.
Jimenez continued, “With my legal background and experience, I am committed to revitalizing the Charter, making it work for all of us once again. I will encourage active citizen involvement in crafting thoughtful, well-reasoned amendments, which will ultimately be approved by the voters.”
In 2020, Jimenez and his wife Sandra both ran for state office in Minnesota, but due to election “anomalies,” we were not elected.
Jose Jimenez ran against Sen. Greg Clausen in 2020. Sandra Jimenez ran for the Minnesota Legislature 2020, for a House district against John Huit.
Both Sandra and Jose Jimenez were ahead at midnight on the night of the election, but when the final results were announced hours later, Sandra and Jose Jimenez were defeated by less than 5%.
In 2016 Jimnez’s daughter Alica Jiminez Hopper ran and lost in a close race (52% to 47%) for a Minnesota state Representative seat in 2016.
In 2020, after the mayor of Minneapolis asked the state National Guard to move in after protests over the death of George Floyd escalated with a fatal shooting, widespread looting, fires and the police deployment of tear gas and demands for the defunding of the police, the Jimenez family took a look at the political climate in Minnesota and became concerned and decided to move to Florida after two decades of serving there.
Jose Jimenez now states, “Since moving here, my wife and I with our children, and grandchildren, we have now embraced Sarasota County as our new home. This community is a wonderful place to live, work, and raise a family. From the beginning, we became involved in local politics, and I now proudly serve on the Republican Executive Committee of Sarasota County."
Having established himself within the Sarasota Community, Jimenez decided to run for the Charter Review Board because as he states, “I want to give back to this incredible community.
Jimenez believes that Sarasota County is one of only 20 counties in Florida with its own charter—a kind of "mini-constitution" that governs county operations. This unique structure gives us, the residents, a powerful opportunity to shape our future and ensure responsible governance and development.
Once elected, Jimenez plans to pursue the following in his first year in office:
1. Reverse the Amendment to Art. 7.1A - this amendment blocks CRB and citizen amendments to the Charter.
2. Amend the Bylaws to have 4 annual meetings instead of 3—-proper oversight responsibilities of the CRB over the County Commission and elected officials requires regular review and discussion by CRB members and citizens.
3. Transparency in Spending/Operations in Sarasota by implementing FOIA-type requests and subpoena power by the CRB.
On November 5th a vote for Jose Jimenez for Charter Review Board – District 5 will bring us together so we can continue to make Sarasota County a great place to live.
